Our Funky Fish go to the Art Expo

Here are our funky fish on display at the Art Expo.

We used these Funky Fish Art posters to explain all the steps in making our art work.

Funky Fish Art

One of the most important things we did in Week 4 was to get our art work ready for the Art Expo.  Once the clay fish had been fired in the kiln, we matched our named photo to the right fish shape.  Then we drew that shape and experimented with colours and shapes.  After some experimentation, we coloured our paper copy with the colours we wanted to use on our clay fish.

Finally it was time to apply paint!  The paint had to dry over the weekend before Mrs Bear added a googly eye and varnished them with PVA glue to make the colours smudegeproof and shiny.

First, we matched our named photo with the right fired fish.

We painted our clay fish in the colours that had used on our final paper copy.

We held the paint brush by the silver section, just like a pencil, so that we hd good control over our movements.

Room 2's Birthday Graphs

We were interested to find out when everyone's birthday was, so that we can give people a birthday day on the right day.  First, we decided to show the data using a pictograph.

Our pictograph of birthday months.
Then, we transferred this data into a bar graph in our Maths books, and wrote several sentences about it, to show our understanding using Maths language such as 'same as', ' more than' and 'less than'.  Later, we made pie graphs with Mrs Bear using the same raw data.  It was interesting to see the same information displayed on different graphs, and decide which one we liked best.

A bar graph of birthday months.

Different pie graphs of our birthday months.  Can you see why they are called 'pie graphs'?

Which graph do you think is the easiest to read?  By year 6, we need to be able to read and make all sorts of different graphs.

Cockle Bay Gymnastics

We are very proud to have four members of the girls gymnastic team in Room 2.  Ruby, Jasmine, Isla and Luca-Rose competed in the inter-school gymnastics competition, along with other schools in the East Auckland area.  They looked super smart in their Cockle Bay leotards and ribbons.

Reading contract

The Rat Burgers reading group are working hard to complete their reading contract on their guided reader, On the Ball.  Here they are researching all the different kinds of ball you can find in sports, using texts boxes and diagrams in the book, and information from Google for Kids.  When they have finished their research, they will be conducting a scientific investigation to see which ball bounces the most.

Hockey

Room 2 has PE on Wednesday mornings, and in the winter months we have been learning how to play hockey.
