READING

Demon Dentists read Junior Journal 54, in particular Life Jackets.  They learned all about different life jackets and what each kind is are made from.  At the end, they made  water safety poster featuring life jackets.

The Midnight Gang read Race to the Finish.  They could draw each race flag and could explain what each one meant.  After that, they made a race track for Matchbox cars.

Bad Dads read Junior Journal 51, in particular Living in a Colourful World.  They painted the colours of the rainbow in the correct order, and then mixed primary colours to make their own colours.

The Rat Burgers read connected 1 2004, in particular Birds' Breakfast.  They had to calculate lots of different lengths of worms.  In one activity, they had to show the relative lengths of different worms using unicubes.

Bad Dads read Junior Journal 52, in particular The Jungle in my Garden.  They drew and labelled garden insects.  After that they made their own bug catcher and searched the school grounds for insects and slugs.

The Demon Dentists read Junior Journal 46, in particular The Gulls of Sulphur Bay.  They drew word webs of gulls and then made their own nest.  They were able to use their hands, rather than a beak like a bird, but even so it was very difficult to weave the twigs into themselves.

The Midnight Gang read A Suit for Walking in Space and the Demon Dentists read A Trip to Space Camp.  As part of the reading contracts, we made models of rockets using concentrations of rocket fuel and different volumes of payload.  Then we observed which rocket went the highest, although this was very hard to measure because they all went so high!  Several rockets landed on the classroom roof and are still waiting for Mr Want to retrieve.

The Bad Dads read A World of Homes.  In the reading contracts, they talked about their own home as well as other people's homes.  Then they designed and built a model home out of lego.

The Gangsta Grannies read the chapter book, River Runners.  One of the tasks in the reading contract was to make a map of the river showing all the rapids.  Then they made a model of the river using tinfoil, sand and foliage from around the school grounds.

The Rat Burgers read, On the Ball.  Then they collected all the sports balls they could find in the junior sports shed, and conducted a scientific investigation to see which ball bounced the most.

They found 11 balls altogether.

To make sure that there data was reliable, they repeated each ball bounce five times

They made sure that they recorded accurate data.

The spider ball was everyone's favourite ball.
The average number of bounces were plotted on a bar graph.

We calculated the average number of bounces using division.

The Midnight Gang read A Suit for Walking in Space and the Demon Dentists read A Trip to Space Camp.  Then we investigated which was best rocket fuel and the heaviest payload to use to make our rocket go the highest.

David also made a cool 'sp' bubble map.  He found all the words in the dictionary and copied them carefully.

The Bad Dad Reading group read the book, Elastics, and then taught the class how to play elastics games.
